Fan coil units

Fan coils units are devices used to maintain a constant temperature in rooms and for ventilation. They are used in air conditioning systems based on the so-called chilled water. This means that the cooling / heating factor of the system is water, and not refrigerant (freon) as in air conditioners. The device works on the principle of heat exchange with the environment, it also brings fresh air into the room.

The units are made of specially galvanized sheet metal, ensuring maximum protection against corrosion. C & H offers the following types of fan coil units: wall, floor, duct and cassette. They are suitable for two-pipe systems. Due to their properties, fan coil units are recommended for offices, public spaces, but they can also be installed in apartments due to their quiet operation and aesthetic appearance, perfectly matching the decor of a modern interior.

What is a fancoil and its device?

The fan coil is the key element for chiller-fan coil air conditioning systems and central air heating systems. It is an air preparation unit and is designed to change the temperature and air circulation in the room. Fancoils can be used to control and change the climate in rooms for various purposes:

  • residential;
  • office;
  • trading;
  • production;
  • warehouse.

The operation of the fan coil unit can be controlled both manually using a mechanical thermostat, and automatically using a three-way valve with a servo drive.

Design features and principle of operation of fan coil units

In fan coil units, the refrigerant or heat carrier is water (or its mixture with ethylene glycol) – unlike air conditioners that use freon.  The refrigerant from the chiller (water-cooling machine) or the heat carrier from the boiler is supplied by means of a pump to the heat exchanger (radiator) of the fan coil unit, to which air is blown by a fan. Acquiring at the same time the set temperature, the air is supplied to the room.

When choosing a fan coil, for the correct calculation of power, you should definitely pay attention to the volume of the room and the number of heat inflows. Also, you need to consider the following design features:

  • location type;
  • number of heat exchangers ( two-pipe fan coil units and four );
  • the presence of an automation kit (3-way valve with a servo).

Depending on the installation location, fan coil units are distinguished:

  • cassette (mounting in the ceiling space with a visible decorative panel);
  • channel (installation behind the ceiling, flush-mounted, with diffusers for air supply);
  • wall (mounted on the wall, in the form of a conventional air conditioner);
  • floor (installed on the floor, on legs or mounted on the bottom of the wall using a console).

Floor type fan coil units can be case -mounted (in a plastic decorative case – for surface mounting) and frameless (for installation in a plasterboard wall niche).  The most common cassette and duct fan coil units in use. The former provide uniform air distribution in four directions, while the latter cover a large area of the room, thanks to an extensive system of air duct channels in the ceiling space.

Advantages of fan coil units:

  • versatility (can be used for a wide range of facilities, both for household premises and for large commercial and industrial buildings);
  • efficiency (the cost of operating fan coil units for large facilities is much lower than that of other cooling and heating systems);
  • flexibility and scalability (possibility to partially use the heating or cooling system according to needs, increasing or decreasing the number of fan coils involved).
  • efficiency (fan coil is able to quickly create the required temperature in the room and effectively maintain it thanks to an automated system for supplying coolant or heat carrier).
